The Briton closes a successful 2018, marked by his two new Grammy Awards and his wedding to Cherry Seaborn.
Ed Sheeran has had a great year and just closed it with record ticket sales that crown him as the top box office artist of the last 30 years. The Thinking Out Loud musician has sold a total of 4,860,482 tickets for the 94 concerts he has given this year in 53 cities, so the artist has earned more than 380 million euros. The data are part of the box office report prepared annually by the research group Pollstar, for 30 years.
These figures far exceed that of Taylor Swift, second on the list, who raised 303 million euros in 2018, and double the amount obtained by Beyoncé and Jay-Z, who raised 223 million in their joint tour. Pink is the singer in the fourth position with 148 million euros, an amount that approaches Bruno Mars and The Eagles, in the fifth and sixth places, with 147 and 145.9, respectively. Justin Timberlake, Roger Waters, U2 and The Rolling Srones, close the top 10 of the top box office artists of 2018, with amounts ranging between 102 and 132 million euros.
This milestone in Sheeran’s career shows the progressive ancestry that the Englishman has starred in since the release of his first album in 2011. This year the 27-year-old singer has won successive awards for his latest album, ÷ (Divide), including two Grammy awards in January in the categories of Best Solo Pop Vocal Performance for the song Shape of you, and Best Pop Vocal Album. After this year’s awards ceremony, the singer has won a total of 4 Grammy awards and 13 nominations in his seven-year career.
But his professional achievements are not what stands out in Ed Sheeran’s great year. After announcing his engagement to his girlfriend Cherry Seaborn in January, the singer-songwriter has been seen in recent months with a ring, which have confirmed the secret wedding between the couple. In an interview last August with Access, the YouTube program focused on celebrities, the Britain confirmed that he had already married without saying a word. The interviewer asked him about his supposedly future liaison: “And what about the details of the wedding? Have you chosen a date? Do you know where it will be?”. Then Sheeran, in silence, raises her left hand and shows the wedding ring. “But how exciting,” exclaims the interviewer. “Congratulations! How did you manage to do that?” he asks. “I never wanted to do anything very public, to be honest,” he replied, without going into details.
Sheeran and Seaborn, childhood friends, started dating in 2015. From the beginning, they kept the relationship away from the media spotlights, so it’s no wonder the union took place privately. Last year, the singer attributed to his new wife the fact that he kept his feet on the ground and remained sober after a few years of substance abuse. “He was a 25-year-old boy on tour in the music industry. I needed someone to balance my life,” he said then on The Jonathan Ross Show. That same year, the performer released the hit single Perfect, which is inspired by his relationship with the British.
